Some questions about silicone and plastic

Question 1: Is silicone a type of plastic?

Silicone is not a plastic. Silicone rubber: silicone rubber is a highly reactive adsorbent material, which is an amorphous substance with the chemical formula mSiO2・nH2O. insoluble in water and any solvent, non-toxic and tasteless, chemically stable, and does not react with any substance except strong alkali and hydrofluoric acid. Various types of silica gel have different microporous structures due to different manufacturing methods. The chemical composition and physical structure of silica gel determine that it has many characteristics that are difficult to replace by other similar materials: high adsorption performance, good thermal stability, stable chemical properties, high mechanical strength, etc. Silicone rubber is classified according to its pore size: large pore silica gel, coarse pore silica gel, B-type silica gel, fine pore silica gel.

Question 2: The difference between pvc rubber and ordinary rubber

PVC is not rubber at all, it should belong to plastic. Plastic is generally hard, rubber is generally soft, but this is not absolute. pvc soft rubber is a special case. It is because PVC soft rubber feels like rubber, but in fact it is not rubber at all. Rubber is divided into natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, neoprene, nitrile rubber, silicone rubber and so on, nearly 20 kinds. Rubber is one of the polymer materials.

High elasticity at room temperature is a unique feature of rubber materials, which is not available in any other material, so rubber is also called elastomer. Highly elastic materials are characterized by a large elastic deformation up to 1000% under external forces and a rapid recovery of deformation after removal of external forces, while the deformation of metallic materials with general elasticity is only about 1%.

What is rubber, as defined in ASTM D1566: Rubber is a material that can be modified to recover its deformation quickly and forcefully under large deformation. Modification essentially means vulcanization. Raw rubber, i.e., rubber that has not been cross-linked, consists of linear macromolecules or macromolecules with branched chains. It has three states, namely, glassy, highly elastic and viscous flow state, as the temperature changes. The unvulcanized rubber becomes hard at low temperature and soft at high temperature, has no ability to keep its shape and has low mechanical properties, so it is basically useless and must be vulcanized before it can be used. In other words, raw rubber needs a series of processing to make useful rubber products, thus giving rise to the rubber processing industry.

The processing of PVC does not require vulcanization. If you light it on fire, PVC will turn into liquid, while rubber will only turn into ash. From this appearance, it is easy to distinguish them. Also rubber is mostly industrial products. Only a few of them are used in daily life. For example, tires, hoses, tapes, sealing products, vibration damping products and so on.

Question 3: What is the difference between silicone and plastic?

Silicone rubber is a highly active adsorbent material, insoluble in water and any solvent, non-toxic and tasteless, chemically stable, does not react with any substance except strong alkali and hydrofluoric acid. Various types of silica gel form different microporous structures due to their different manufacturing methods. The chemical composition and physical structure of silica gel determine that it has many characteristics that are difficult to replace by other similar materials: high adsorption performance, good thermal stability, stable chemical properties, high mechanical strength, etc. Silicone is classified according to its pore size: large pore silica gel, coarse pore silica gel, B-type silica gel, fine pore silica gel.

Plastic is a kind of material with high molecular weight organic substance as the main component, it presents solid shape when processing is completed, and it can be shaped by flowing in the manufacturing as well as processing process.
